On Contemporary Art and Moco Museum, Amsterdam

One of the things I we could explore more easily is contemporary art. Unless you’re in big global cities like London, New York or San Francisco, it’s hard finding good contemporary art.

Which is why I feel that Moco is as much of a must do in Amsterdam as the Van Gogh museum.

I know it’s the Banksy’s that everyone talks about but this place is a treasure of modern and contemporary art that goes beyond Banksy. There are legends like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons and Kaws and Jean-Michael Basquait and Damien Hirst.

The Iranian artists Icy and Sot which their dreams of revolution. Murakami and his subversion of Kawai. JR forcing you to stare America’s gun culture in the face. The ethereal, ghost like pumpkins of Yayoi Kusama. The provocative work of The Kid using images we think we know to question race and identity.

The great masters of the past are important. But contemporary art is important as well. It forces us to think deeply about the times we live in, the world around us and our place in the world.. and in the process it helps us grow and ways that the art of the past may not always do so.
